đ UNDERSTANDING DOOR BACKSET MONTREALâ 2 3/8″ vs 2 3/4″ đ
đ DO YOU KNOW YOUR DOOR BACKSET? (IMPORTANT DETAIL MOST PEOPLE MISS)
Many clients donât realize that when installing or replacing a lock, one small detail makes a big difference: the backset.
đ What is a backset?
The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole where the lock or handle is installed.
đ THE TWO STANDARD SIZES
âïž 2 3/8″ (60mm)
âą Common on older residential doors
âą Found in older homes, condos, and apartments
âą Typical on locks installed between 1980â2000
âïž 2 3/4″ (70mm)
âą Standard on most newer doors (2000âtoday)
âą Common on commercial doors
âą Used for offices, storefronts, and heavier doors
âą Provides better spacing for larger and stronger hardware
â ïž WHY IT MATTERS
Installing the wrong backset can lead to:
âą Misaligned locks (off-center installation)
âą Weak security or improper function
âą Extra labor and costly door modifications
âą Need to push or alter the latch deeper into the door
đ Many residential locks are adjustable (twist or pull latch),
but not all locks are adjustableâespecially commercial-grade hardware.
đ RESIDENTIAL vs đŹ COMMERCIAL
đ Residential Doors
âą Older doors: usually 2 3/8″
âą Newer doors: now standard at 2 3/4″
đŹ Commercial Doors
âą Most require 2 3/4″
âą Some older doors (pre-2000) may still use 2 3/8″
âą If a 2 3/8″ latch is required, it often needs to be special ordered
đ ïž PRO TIP FROM A LOCKSMITH
