Important Notice When Replacing a Gripset (Front Door Handle Set Weiser or Schlage)
When replacing a gripset lock on a main house door, it’s very important to understand that visible marks or “signs” may remain on the door, even when replacing it with the same brand or same model.
Why does this happen?
Older gripsets — especially models from the 1990s to early 2000s — were manufactured with different dimensions than today’s versions.
For example:
-
Many gripsets from around year 2000 were built with a 7½ inch center-to-center measurement
-
The overall height of the gripset was typically 8 to 9 inches
-
While modern gripsets are adjustable, the exterior footprint is not always identical
Because of this, when an old gripset is removed, the previous outline, paint shadow, screw holes, or wear marks may remain visible on the door.
Even if we replace with the same model
Even when installing the same model gripset, newer generations often have:
-
Slightly different plate shapes
-
Different trim coverage
-
Updated internal mechanisms
- Standard on all doors deadbolt on top to gripset is 5 1/2 inch from gripset to bottom screw older versions 7 1/2 inch.
⚠️ This means the old marks will not always be fully covered.
Aesthetic considerations
If you or your spouse are very detail-oriented or sensitive to aesthetics, please be aware:
-
Seeing these marks every day can be frustrating
-
The only true way to eliminate them completely is door repainting or refinishing
We believe in full transparency — this is not an installation defect, but a design and manufacturing evolution issue.
Common example
A very common case we see:
-
Weiser Heritage gripsets from 1995–1999
-
After removal, visible signs are often left on the door surface
-
These marks are normal and expected due to age and design differences
